PARASITE WOOD

This piece, hand carved in Indonesia, is called "parasite" wood. The burls form on various trees including china-berry, and mahogany. The odd shaped burls are cut, leaving the host tree intact. The carvers create whimsical figures and animals from the natural form of wood. The carvings came from the tropical islands of Indonesia. Woodcarving is an art passed from generation to generation. Each piece represents years of training and practice.
