| African Gourd Shaker Instrument | |
Shaker instruments are among the most ancient in human culture. This one, from west Africa, is a hollow gourd with beads attached on long cords. The stem is held in the hand, and swung to cause the attached beads to strike the hollow gourd, making a surprising loud rhythmic sound. The beads are not shells, but are instead part of a common African grass. |
